High Flight is a setting of the WWII poem by John Gillespie Magee, Jr (1922-1941), a poet and pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force who was killed at the age of 19 in a mid-air collision over England. It is essentially a love song to flying, and was a favorite poem of the composer's grandfather who quoted it often, and was also a WWII fighter pilot.
